ABOUT TAAT-WEC

The Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation-Water Enabler Compact (TAAT-WEC) is one of the Fifteen (15) TAAT Compacts funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Bank’s “Africa Feed Africa” initiative.

TAAT-WEC is led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). The TAAT-WEC projected started in 2018, with activities in Mali, Burkina Fao, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Malawi. The activities of TAAT-WEC in Nigeria are executed by the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with Engr. Prof Henry E. Igbadun, the Programme Leader of the Irrigation Research Programme of IAR as the TAAT-WEC Country Water Management Coordinator.

The tasks of TAAT-WEC project in Nigeria are to:

1. Scale-out proven tools, technological solutions and innovations in irrigation and agricultural water management to increase productivity and production of wheat, rice and sorghum.

2. Build the capacity of a cadre of trainers, including innovation platform facilitators, extensions agents, champion farmers and youths in the proper use of irrigation and water management technologies and implementation of good irrigation management practices.

3. Attract investment from public and private sector sources into irrigated agricultural production of wheat, rice and sorghum through the demonstration of viability and profitability of irrigation technologies.

TAAT-WEC Project technologies demonstration and up-scaling activities takes place in four states in Nigeria: Kano, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Jigawa States in 2018/19 and 2019/2020 seasons.

Field activities in Kano State are taking place in Kadawa, Kadani-Kura, Alkamawa and Bagwei . The focus is on Irrigation water management to improve wheat and rice crops production and productivity

In Nasarawa, TAAT-WEC has demonstration fields in Azuba Bashayi, Buka Sidi, Gidan Mai-Akuya, and Madagba Communities. The focus is on effective water management to improve rice crop production productivity

In Jigawa and Kaduna States, TAAT-WEC field activities focuses on In-situ rain water harvesting and conservation to enhance sorghum production.  Demonstration fields are in Gumel, Jigawa State and in Janfalan in Ikara and Sabon Gari Daji in Makarafi LGAs of Kaduna State.
