IAR and IITA Build Capacity on Quality Maize Seed Production

The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria, in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), successfully commenced a two-day Training Course on Quality Seed Production of Maize Varieties and Hybrids from 4th to 5th August 2026. The training brought together researchers, seed analysts, data managers, programme officers, and other stakeholders in the seed sector to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in quality maize seed production.

The Executive Director of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf, represented by the Deputy Director, Prof. Nafiu Abdu, welcomed participants and emphasized that the availability of quality seed remains the foundation for increased crop productivity, food security, and sustainable agricultural development. Other senior officials in attendance included the Assistant Director, Research, Prof. L. J. Bamaiyi, and the Assistant Director, Extension, Monitoring and Evaluation, Prof. A. I. Sharifai, while Dr. S. Meseka and Mrs. Bossey Olubunmi A., Data Manager/Analyst, represented IITA.

The training featured presentations by renowned resource persons from IAR and IITA. Prof. M. Oyekunle spoke on the Importance of Maize and Released Varieties and later demonstrated Pollination Techniques essential for maintaining genetic purity. Prof. I. S. Usman delivered a session on the Anatomy and Physiology of the Maize Plant, while Prof. S. G. Ado discussed Open-Pollinated Variety (OPV) Seed Production and Varietal Maintenance. Prof. H. Mani presented on Good Agronomic Practices (GAP), Prof. I. Y. Amapu handled Soil Management Practices, and Dr. S. Meseka delivered an in-depth presentation on Hybrid Seed Production and Maintenance of Inbred Lines. Together, the sessions provided participants with comprehensive knowledge of maize seed production, hybrid development, soil and crop management, and quality assurance.

The programme continues with practical field demonstrations and additional sessions on pest and disease management, seed processing and storage, seed quality assessment, and seed business development. These hands-on activities are expected to further equip participants with the technical competencies required to strengthen Nigeria’s seed systems and promote the production of high-quality maize seed.

The collaboration between IAR and IITA once again demonstrates a shared commitment to capacity building, research excellence, and sustainable seed systems development that will enhance food security and transform maize production in Nigeria.
