History
The IAR Security Unit
has been established to enforce laws rigorously within the university and
decisively safeguard the lives and properties of all IAR community members.
Students are the backbone of this community; without research, there can be no
academic or non-academic staff, nor any local business owners. While IAR is
recognized as a safe and conducive environment for learning, it is not immune
to everyday challenges and minor crimes such as theft, criminal trespass,
assault, and fraud. Fortunately, serious crimes, including murder, armed
robbery, rape, organized crime, kidnapping, and terrorism, are exceptionally
rare. To address current national security challenges, we have reinforced our
security network. Our security staff are authorized to stop, check, and demand
identification from any individual they reasonably suspect, whether a student
or staff member. This proactive measure ensures we maintain a secure atmosphere
at all times. Our security unit is dedicated to upholding peace, resolving
disputes among students and staff, and protecting lives and property while
enforcing the rules and regulations of IAR without exception. To achieve our
mission effectively, the security unit comprises several essential
subdivisions: the Operations Office, Patrol Unit, Investigation Unit,
Intelligence Unit, Provost, and Hunters Unit.
Vision
Our vision is clear:
to deliver a safe and secure environment through aggressive and continuous
patrols, meticulous supervision, and the implementation of robust security
measures that foster a conducive atmosphere for learning and research at IAR now
and into the future.
Mission
Our mission is
unequivocal: to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and
research visitors. We will relentlessly pursue this mission with a
community-centric approach, vigorous patrols, constant monitoring of our
critical infrastructure, and effective crime prevention and awareness programs.
Collaboration with external security agencies and community organizations is
not just an option; it is a necessity to fulfill our mission as mandated by the
Officer-in-Charge.
Justification
The security unit places significant emphasis
on justifying security decisions within the context of the institute. This
justification is generally believed to be influenced by management
considerations and achieved through various managerial techniques. The security
decision-making process should be transparent and verifiable, from the
articulation of goals and objectives to the definition of criteria and value
units.
Goals
Ø
To guarantee the
safety and security of the IAR community and its immediate surroundings.
Ø
To systematically
address all security needs of IAR.
Ø
To prevent potentially
violent situations through proactive intelligence.
Ø
To coordinate and
strengthen safety and security strategies in collaboration with other security
agencies in Zaria.
Activities
We are committed to
safeguarding lives and properties through relentless patrolling, surveillance,
and monitoring. We will rigorously enforce laws and regulations to protect the
life, facilities, and research farms of IAR from unwanted intrusions and acts
of vandalism.
Challenges
We face significant challenges, including inadequate manpower and insufficient equipment to confront evolving security threats. Our security personnel often operate with limited resources, such as relying on sticks (PR24) while confronting criminals armed with advanced weapons. Furthermore, organizing intelligence units and ensuring the welfare of our security staff are critical challenges that we must overcome decisively.
