The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) Samaru

As part of its commitment to promoting the health and well-being of members of the Institute community, the Samaru IAR Multipurpose Cooperative Society successfully organized a Health Day for staff of the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the Faculty of Agriculture, security personnel, and casual workers on Thursday, 4th June 2026.

The programme was facilitated by a team from the Ahmadu Bello University Health Services, comprising doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, and health attendants. The team was led by the Deputy Director of the University Health Services, Dr. Alex A. Otu, while the Matron of the IAR Clinic, Mrs. Amina Yahaya Hammari, also joined the team in providing healthcare services and health education to participants.

The Health Day featured an enlightening health talk and a range of free medical screening services, including rapid malaria tests, random blood sugar tests, blood pressure checks, and hepatitis B and C screenings. The initiative provided participants with an opportunity to assess their health status and receive professional medical advice from qualified healthcare practitioners.

During the health education session, participants were encouraged to embrace healthy lifestyles through balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate rest, and effective stress management. The facilitators emphasized the importance of consuming a variety of nutritious foods, engaging in routine exercise, maintaining personal hygiene, and keeping a clean environment to prevent common diseases such as malaria.

The healthcare professionals also highlighted the dangers associated with smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, while stressing the importance of routine medical check-ups, especially for individuals aged 40 years and above, to facilitate the early detection and management of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, and other non-communicable diseases.

Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely, informative, and beneficial. Many commended the Cooperative Society for creating an opportunity to access free health services and receive valuable information on preventive healthcare.

The successful Health Day further reinforces the Cooperative Society’s dedication to the welfare of its members and the broader Institute community, while promoting a culture of healthy living and preventive healthcare.

Special appreciation goes to the Chairman of the Samaru IAR Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Prof. L. J. Bamaiyi, and the entire Cooperative leadership for championing this laudable initiative, as well as the Ahmadu Bello University Health Services for their professional support and commitment to improving community health. A healthy workforce is the foundation of a productive institution. Together, we continue to build a healthier, stronger, and more resilient IAR community.
