Today, 9th April 2026, the Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University in successfully organized a Workshop on Farmer Forums and Media Engagement on Agricultural Biotechnology in Nigeria.
The workshop was held under the theme: “Enhancing Farmer Awareness, Dialogue, and Experience Sharing on Agricultural Biotechnology Crops.” The event aimed to strengthen farmers’ understanding of agricultural biotechnology, promote open dialogue, and encourage the sharing of practical experiences on the use of improved crop technologies
The Executive Director of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf, was ably represented by the Deputy Director, Prof. Nafiu Abdu, who delivered the opening remarks. In his address, he emphasized the importance of creating platforms where farmers, scientists, and other stakeholders can interact and exchange knowledge on modern agricultural technologies that can enhance productivity and resilience.
The welcome address was delivered on behalf of Prof. M. F. Ishiyaku by Prof. M. L. Umar, who highlighted the significance of strengthening farmer engagement and improving awareness of biotechnology innovations developed to address production challenges.
The workshop featured insightful presentations from renowned resource persons including Prof. M. L. Umar, Prof. M. Abdulmalik, and Dr. M. A. Yahaya, who provided technical guidance and facilitated discussions on agricultural biotechnology and its role in improving crop performance and farmer livelihoods.
Participants at the workshop included farmers drawn from Zamfara State, Katsina State, and Kaduna State, creating an important platform for experience sharing and direct interaction between farmers and scientists.
The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to ask questions, share field experiences, and deepen their understanding of biotechnology crops including TELA maize, PBR cowpea and Bt cotton, thereby strengthening the link between agricultural research, extension, and farmers’ adoption of improved technologies.
