Today,
Saturday 7th February 2026, the IAR Veterans Volleyball Club successfully
organized an exciting 5-aside Veterans Volleyball Tournament, bringing together
seasoned volleyball players from within and outside the Institute for
Agricultural Research (IAR), including participants from Zaria city and Sabon
Gari Local Government Area.
The
tournament featured four competitive teams—A, B, C, and D—and seamlessly
blended sportsmanship, fitness, intellectual engagement, and environmental
sustainability.
The
event opened with an individual opening prayer, setting a calm and purposeful
tone, followed by opening remarks from the Chairman, IAR Sports Committee,
Prof. A. I. Sharifai, who applauded the Veterans Club for sustaining an active
sporting culture that promotes health, unity, and teamwork among staff and the
wider community.
A
symbolic and impactful moment was the presentation of tree seedlings to the
Tournament Committee by Prof. I. M. Otonu, Chairman FPT, Faculty of
Agriculture, reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to environmental
sustainability.
Adding
strong academic depth to the programme, Prof. Aisha Abdulkadir, Head of
Department, Soil Science, delivered a thought-provoking discourse on “Ecosystem
Sustainability and Its Importance to Human Health.” She emphasized the
inseparable link between environmental stewardship, agriculture, and human
well-being. This was immediately followed by a tree-planting exercise led by
her, translating knowledge into action.
Before
the commencement of matches, players participated in a mandatory dynamic
aerobic warm-up session, professionally led by Obinna Nwosu, ensuring fitness
readiness and injury prevention.
The
competition progressed into Pool Play Matches (Round 1), played under a
best-of-three sets or time-based format, with teams officiating in turns—an
approach that reflected discipline and fair play. An entertaining exhibition
match by active volleyball players further energized the atmosphere and
thrilled spectators.
The
activities continued with a post-tournament reception, where participants and
guests enjoyed refreshments and informal interactions.
The
event climaxed with a closing ceremony, featuring the presentation of medals by
Prof. A. I. Sharifai and Prof. D. B. Ishaya, celebrating excellence,
participation, and unity. A closing prayer formally brought the tournament to
an end, as participants departed in high spirits.
The IAR Veterans Volleyball Tournament once again
demonstrated how sports can effectively promote healthy living, community
bonding, and environmental consciousness—core values of the Institute for
Agricultural Research.
