Yesterday, 3rd December
2025, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University
made a remarkable field visit to some of its Adopted Villages Dutsan Abba,
Marwa, and Yakasai to assess the progress of the banana plantations established
through the Institute’s support. The visit was led by the Executive Director,
Prof. Ado Yusuf, ably represented by the Assistant Director, Extension,
Monitoring and Evaluation, Prof. A.I. Sharifai, alongside the IAR Adopted
Village Unit.
During the visit, the
team was delighted to witness the impressive growth and productivity of the
banana plantations. The banana suckers donated to farmers by the Institute
exactly one year ago, in December 2024, have matured beautifully. It will
interest you to know that the bananas are gotten from the Institute’s tissue
culture technology. Many of the plantations have already begun fruiting, with
some farmers proudly harvesting their first yields—an encouraging milestone
that reflects resilience, good agronomic practice, and strong community
engagement.
The outing was
described as highly successful, filled with excitement and gratitude from both
the farmers and the visiting team. The management expressed deep appreciation
for the farmers’ commitment to nurturing the plantations and maximizing the
opportunity provided. Special commendation was also extended to the Head of the
Adopted Village Unit, Dr. H.O. Yusuf, for her outstanding leadership and
dedication to ensuring the success of the Adopted Village initiative.
The visit reaffirms the
Institute’s commitment to supporting rural communities, improving livelihoods,
and promoting sustainable agricultural development through practical
interventions and consistent follow-up.
