The Association of Organic Agriculture Practitioners of Nigeria (NOAN), the West Africa Secretariat of Ecological Organic Agriculture, in partnership with the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, has officially commenced a capacity-building training under the ECOWAS Strategy on Youth Employability Project (ECOWAS-YEP).
The training focuses on strengthening the skills of Nigerian
youth in the Agro-Sylvo-Pastoral and Fisheries sectors, equipping them with
hands-on competencies, modern production techniques, and business-oriented
knowledge essential for thriving in today’s agricultural landscape. The
initiative aligns with regional efforts to enhance youth employability, promote
sustainable farming, and support ecological organic agriculture across West
Africa.
The opening session featured remarks by the Executive Director
of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf, ably represented by the Deputy Director, Prof. Nafiu
Abdu. In his address, he emphasized the importance of building skilled,
knowledgeable, and innovative youth who can contribute meaningfully to national
food security, climate-smart agriculture, and rural economic growth. He
commended the collaboration and reaffirmed IAR’s commitment to supporting
programmes that empower young people and strengthen agricultural value chains.
The training, which is ongoing at the Balarabe Tanimu Conference
Hall, is being conducted under the guidance of Prof. Arunah U. Lucky, Programme
Leader, Legumes and Oil Seeds Programme. Participants will engage in practical
demonstrations, technical sessions, and interactive discussions designed to
broaden their expertise in agroecology, livestock systems, and fisheries
management.
This partnership marks another significant stride in advancing
sustainable agriculture, organic farming principles, and youth employment
opportunities in Nigeria.
