IAR Kicks Off 2026 In-House Research Review Meetings with the Irrigation Research Programme

Today, 28th October 2025, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, officially commenced its 2026 In-House Research Review Meeting, starting with the Irrigation Research Programme.

Unlike other research programmes that typically begin at the start of the year, the Irrigation Research Programme holds its review at the onset of the dry season, immediately after the rains. This unique timing aligns with the commencement of irrigation activities and marks the first research review of the year at the Institute.

The session opened with a warm welcome and inspiring opening remarks by the Chairman, Prof. L. J. Bamaiyi, Assistant Director Research, who underscored the values of integrity, transparency, and dedication as the foundation of impactful research. He encouraged participants to uphold honesty and commitment in their pursuit of scientific excellence and institutional progress.

In his presentation, Prof. Hamza Mani, Programme Leader, provided an overview of the key achievements and challenges recorded during the period under review. He highlighted critical issues such as crop failures, recurrent drought, pest and disease outbreaks, and flooding, which continue to pose challenges to irrigated agriculture across various research sites.

A major highlight of the session was the comprehensive review of 12 ongoing Research Projects (RPBs), which were reported to be making steady progress across multiple thematic areas of irrigation science and technology. In addition, two new Research Proposals (RPAs) were presented for consideration—each focused on introducing innovative approaches and technologies aimed at improving irrigation efficiency, water management, and crop resilience under changing climatic conditions.

The review session reaffirmed IAR’s strong commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable irrigation research as a key driver of agricultural productivity and national food security.
