Today, 2nd October 2025, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in collaboration with the Programme for Integrated Development and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Niger Basin (PIDACC/NB) – Federal Ministry of Water Resources, organized a Green Field Day at Kasarawa Village, Wamakko LGA, Sokoto State.
The field day showcased
the establishment and extension of best agricultural practices for climate
change adaptation, while also serving as a platform for farmers to engage with
researchers and learn about innovative, research-backed practices that can
enhance resilience to changing climate conditions.
In his welcome address,
the Executive Director of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf, emphasized the importance of
the project in supporting farmers with sustainable solutions that boost
productivity while safeguarding natural resources.
Goodwill messages were
delivered by key stakeholders and partners including PIDACC Abuja, the Federal
Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR), Sokoto-Rima River Basin Development
Authority (SRRBDA), and Sokoto Agricultural Development Project (SADP)—all
reaffirming their commitment to supporting farmers in mitigating the effects of
climate change.
Farmers expressed great
enthusiasm and happiness, noting that the practical demonstrations and
interactions would help them improve their farming practices. Importantly, gender
inclusivity was strongly represented at the event, with the Head of IAR Gender
Unit, Prof. H. A. Yusuf, commending the participation of women farmers and
highlighting their central role in driving agricultural transformation.
This Green Field Day
marks a vital step in bringing research closer to the farming community,
ensuring that farmers across Sokoto and beyond have access to the knowledge and
practices they need to thrive in a changing climate.
