Today, 10th September
2025, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria, paid a courtesy visit to His Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed
Nuhu Bamalli, at his palace in Zaria. The visit was in response to the Emir’s
invitation to formally appreciate the Institute’s consistent efforts in
empowering farmers in IAR’s adopted villages and schools.
It will be recalled
that on 21st August 2025, the Institute flagged off a large-scale distribution
of agricultural inputs and equipment to over 400 farmers and adopted schools,
including threshers, fertilizer applicators, quality seeds, fertilizers, and
herbicides. The intervention forms part of IAR’s mandate to drive sustainable
food production and enhance farmers’ livelihoods.
The delegation,
comprising management staff and farmers, was warmly introduced to the Emir by
Sarkin Kudun Zazzau, the District Head of Zaria Birni, Alhaji Sambo Shehu
Idris. Representing the Executive Director, Prof. Ado Yusuf, was the Deputy
Director of IAR, Prof. Nafiu Abdu, who briefed the Emir on the details of the
empowerment exercise and highlighted ongoing research, extension, and outreach activities
being carried out by IAR across the region.
In his remarks, the
Emir of Zazzau expressed deep appreciation to the Institute for its unwavering
commitment to farmers and communities within his domain. He noted that IAR’s
interventions are not only transforming agriculture but also playing a vital
role in tackling food insecurity and youth unemployment. The Emir further
charged the farmers to make good use of the inputs provided and remain
steadfast in supporting the fight against food insecurity in Nigeria.
The visit ended with
prayers for continued success, fruitful collaborations, and prosperity for the
Institute, farmers, and the nation at large.
