Visit IAR for Educational Excursion
The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello
University (ABU), Zaria, today Thursday, 17 September 2026, received students
from the Faculty of Education, Agricultural Science Education Programme, ABU
Zaria, who visited the Institute for an educational excursion.
The excursion was designed to expose the students to the
practical application of agricultural knowledge and provide them with
first-hand experience of the research activities, technologies and innovations
being developed to address challenges in agriculture.
During the visit, the students toured several key research units
and facilities of the Institute, including Plant Science, Soil Science,
Agronomy, Crop Protection, Agricultural Engineering and Horticulture, among
others.
At the Plant Science and Agronomy units, the students were
exposed to crop research activities, improved crop production practices and the
various approaches used by researchers to enhance agricultural productivity
including biotech and tissue culture.
At the Soil Science Unit, they gained practical insight into the
importance of soil in agricultural production, including soil management,
fertility improvement and the role of scientific research in promoting
sustainable soil health.
At the Crop Protection Unit, the students were introduced to
research activities aimed at managing pests and diseases that affect crops,
highlighting the importance of protecting crops from production losses.
The visit to Agricultural Engineering provided an opportunity
for the students to appreciate the application of engineering principles and
mechanisation in agriculture, including the role of appropriate machinery and
technologies in improving farm operations.
At the Horticulture Unit/Eastwest Seed Knowledge Transfer, the
students were introduced to research and production activities involving
horticultural crops, further broadening their understanding of the diverse
areas covered by agricultural science.
The excursion provided an important link between classroom
learning and practical agricultural research, enabling the students to see how
concepts taught in Agricultural Science Education are applied in real research
and production environments.
The engagement also underscored the important role of IAR in
training and knowledge sharing, while strengthening the connection between
agricultural research and education. Such interactions are valuable in
inspiring the next generation of agricultural educators, researchers and
professionals.
