Highlights from Day 1
of the PDT Meeting at PAPM 2026: Strengthening Product Development and
Market-Driven Crop Improvement
Kano, Wednesday, 13th May 2026: The Product Advancement
and Planning Meeting (PAPM) under the Dryland Crops Program (DCP), Africa Dryland Crops
Improvement Network commenced successfully today at
the Centre For Dryland
Agriculture (CDA), Kano, bringing together researchers,
breeders, development partners, policymakers, seed system actors, processors,
and other stakeholders across the agricultural value chain.
The Day 1 sessions
focused on strengthening market intelligence, reviewing Target Product Profiles
(TPPs), validating benchmark varieties, and advancing strategic discussions on
sorghum, groundnut, and pearl millet improvement. Participants also engaged in
breakout sessions aimed at aligning breeding priorities with market demands and
stakeholder expectations.
Opening remarks from
representatives of NARS 9IAR Samaru and LCRI Maiduguri), CIMMYT, ICRISAT, the
Ministry of Agriculture, and CDA emphasized the importance of collaboration,
innovation, and regional integration in accelerating dryland crop improvement
and varietal advancement in Nigeria and across Africa.
The meeting provided an
important platform for knowledge sharing, product advancement planning, and
stakeholder engagement toward developing farmer- and market-preferred crop
varieties that enhance food security and resilience.
