Bindura University of Science Education, Zimbabwe Visits IAR, ABU Zaria to Strengthen Research Collaboration

Yesterday, 12th May 2026, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, had the honour of hosting the Vice Chancellor of Bindura University of Science Education, Zimbabwe, Prof. Eddie Nwenje, and his delegation during an engagement visit to Nigeria.

The delegation was warmly received by the principal officers of the Institute led by the Assistant Director Research, Prof. L. J. Bamaiyi, who represented the Executive Director of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf.

In his welcome remarks, Prof. Bamaiyi highlighted the rich history and outstanding contributions of the Institute over the past 100 years, emphasizing IAR’s pioneering role in crop-based agricultural research, technology development, and food systems transformation in Nigeria and across Sub-Saharan Africa. He noted that the Institute has continued to develop improved crop varieties and innovative agricultural solutions that have significantly enhanced productivity, strengthened farmer livelihoods, and contributed to national food security.

Responding on behalf of the delegation, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eddie Nwenje, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and the opportunity to engage with one of Africa’s foremost agricultural research institutions. He emphasized the interest of Bindura University of Science Education in establishing collaborations with IAR in areas of mutual research and development interest.

Discussions during the visit explored opportunities for collaboration in agricultural research and innovation, particularly on crops such as jatropha, sorghum, and soybean, with emphasis on their potential for improving oil production, livestock feed, and sustainable agricultural development.

The visit also provided an avenue for knowledge exchange and strengthened the growing relationship between both institutions toward advancing research, innovation, and capacity building within the African agricultural sector.

The meeting concluded with a group photograph, marking not only the end of a successful engagement visit but also the beginning of what is expected to be a fruitful and enduring partnership between the two institutions.
