National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) Hands Over Sugarcane Biofactory to IAR, ABU Zaria
Today, 9th April 2026, the National Sugar Development Council of Nigeria officially handed over a Sugarcane Biofactory to the Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, marking a significant milestone in advancing biotechnology and tissue culture research at the Institute.
The event represents an important step in strengthening Nigeria’s capacity for modern sugarcane and other crops research, rapid multiplication of improved planting materials, and biotechnology-driven crop improvement.
The Executive Director of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf, was unavoidably absent and was ably represented by the Deputy Director, Prof. Nafiu Abdu, who received the facility on behalf of the Institute.
In his remarks, Prof. Nafiu Abdu expressed appreciation to the National Sugar Development Council for the strategic intervention, noting that the Sugarcane Biofactory will significantly enhance the Institute’s capacity in tissue culture, biotechnology research, and the rapid production of disease-free and improved sugarcane planting materials.
The facility is expected to support advanced research, capacity building, and the development of improved technologies that will contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s sugar industry and strengthen agricultural innovation.
This development further reinforces the commitment of the Institute for Agricultural Research to cutting-edge scientific research and the development of technologies that support national agricultural transformation.
