Today, 23rd October
2025, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria, in collaboration with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation
(AATF), commenced a two-day media training workshop for spokespersons,
scientists, and lead farmers engaged in Genetically Modified (GM) product
research and advocacy. The event is taking place at FAB Hotel, Zaria.
The workshop was
officially declared open by the Executive Director, IAR, ably represented by
the Deputy Director, Prof. # Nafiu Abdu,
who welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of effective science
communication in promoting public understanding of agricultural biotechnology.
An insightful
presentation on “Overview of Ag Biotech Campaign and Why the Voice of
Scientists Matters” was delivered by Irene Choge from AATF, highlighting the
crucial role scientists play in shaping informed public discourse around
biotechnology innovations in Africa.
The training featured
engaging sessions on media relations and communication strategies, handled by
distinguished lecturers from the Department of Mass Communication, Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria — Dr. Muhammad Hashim Sulaiman, Dr. Kabiru Danladi, and Dr.
Qaribu Yahaya Nasidi — who delivered impactful presentations that bridged the
gap between science and media practice.
The workshop aims to
strengthen participants’ capacity to communicate GM research accurately,
confidently, and responsibly, thereby fostering greater trust and awareness
among the public about the safety and benefits of modern agricultural
technologies.
