BSN Inducts Abu Vice-Chancellor As Life Member.

BSN Inducts Abu Vice-Chancellor As Life Member for his commitment towards development of biotechnology field.

Impressed by his dogged commitment towards the development of biotechnology field and other related areas in Nigeria, the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) has inducted the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Kabiru Bala, as a Life Member of the Society.

Prof. Bala’s induction as Life Member of the Society was instantly announced today by the BSN President, Prof. Mohammed Bello Yerima, shortly after the Vice-Chancellor rounded off his brief but encouraging remarks at the ongoing 34th Annual Conference of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) at the University.

The BSN President, who was highly impressed with the Vice-Chancellor’s wide knowledge on the use of biotechnology in addressing the pressing global issues, stressed that Prof. Bala should be commended for the establishment of Gene Sequencing facility at the Department of Medical Microbiology, College of Medical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Prof. Yerima also stressed that the Vice-Chancellor’s area of specialization as a distinguished professor of construction management further encouraged the Society to induct him as a Life Member.

Yerima, who doubles as President of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM), disclosed that the official investiture of the Vice-Chancellor as BSN Life Member would take place at the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State next month.

The Vice-Chancellor had, earlier in his remarks, stressed that biotechnology gained increased recognition as an important tool for global growth with its potential impact going beyond imagination, saying that academics and experts continued to foresee a huge revolution shaped by the interaction between new technologies and traditional system.

Biotechnology, according to him, had helped address many global problems such as climate change, food security, energy security, and infectious diseases among others, saying that biotechnology in healthcare, for example, has maximised effectiveness by increasing medical personalisation and individually designed treatments.

The Vice-Chancellor further said that as an academic he could vividly remember supervising a postgraduate work on microbial effects on timber for building.

Prof. Bala thanked the Vice-Chancellor of University of Maiduguri, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba for accepting to come and deliver the keynote lecture at the Conference, saying that ABU was willing to collaborate with the University of Maiduguri in the area of biotechnology research as requested by Prof. Shugaba.
